I have often heard people complaining about how unhappy they are with their lives, jobs, marriages, relationships and their circumstances in general. If you are not happy with any aspect of your life, you have two options, you either remain in that situation or do something about it. You cannot just sit around complaining and feeling miserable about your circumstances. Happy people are not just happy because they are happy people, they are happy because they have consciously chosen to be happy by doing the things that make them happy. Being happy is a state of mind; a state that you have control over. You must make a conscious decision to be happy then you will consciously do what needs to be done to stay happy. If you want to be happy, you must:
 

Make a Conscious Decision and Effort to Be Happy

Happiness is really a choice. If you think that happiness is a byproduct of success, i.e. a high-paying job, a successful business, a rich husband, raising a family, or achieving a goal then you have got it totally wrong because happiness is not about what you don’t have, it is about being content with what you do have. I have heard one too many people say “when I am rich, I will be able to do the things I want to do and then I will be happy”. Then they end up not getting rich, not doing the things they want to do and not being happy; what a life! Make a decision today to be happy no matter what.
 

Have An Attitude of Gratitude

When you have an attitude of gratitude, your perception of life automatically changes. Ingratitude breeds contempt, contempt breeds anger, anger breeds bitterness and bitterness breeds unhappiness. By being grateful for what you have even though you do not have everything you want, you put yourself in a better position to actually receive everything that you need. Start keeping a Gratitude Journal. Write down 5 things you are grateful for every single day. You will realise that have so much more to be grateful for than you actually think.
 

Exercise

When you exercise, your body releases endorphins which are called “happy hormones” into your brain. Exercise also reduces stress, alleviates depression and helps you sleep better. It boosts your self-confidence, self-image, and self-esteem which in turn makes you feel happier within yourself.
 

Spend Quality Time With Your Loved Ones

Spend quality time with the people you care about i.e your parents, husband, wife, children or friends. Spending time with loved ones makes you laugh more, and when you laugh more you are generally happier.

Have Some Me Time

While it’s important to spend time with loved ones, it is even more important to make out time for yourself. Make out time to rest, relax, and recharge your batteries by doing things that you enjoy doing. You can read a good book, listen to music, go out to the movies or a comedy show with friends, write, cook, or do whatever else it is that makes you happy.
 

Don’t Allow Your Happiness To be Dependent on Others

If you truly want to be happy, you must never ever allow your happiness to be dependent on anyone other than yourself. If you are waiting around for someone other than yourself to make you happy then you will be a very unhappy person most of the time. Take responsibility for your life. Do not blame your indescrepancies on others. If something is not working the way you think it should be working take responsibility, fix it and don’t blame someone else. The more you learn to depend on you, the happier you will be.
 
Your life is what you decide to make of it. If you decide to be unhappy then unhappy you will be. In any situation that you find yourself, you are in control of how you let yourself feel about that situation. Some situations are out of our control like losing a loved one. In such cases, you are allowed to grieve but not allowed to get overtaken by your grief. We all have our bad days but it is up to you and nobody else to pick yourself up and keep going. Do not let people or their actions towards you make you feel sad or unhappy because people react to others based on how they are feeling within themselves and if you let everyone having a bad day walk into your space and ruin your day, you are going to be having a whole lot of bad days. You must never allow your state of mind to be determined by someone else other than you.
